Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>State House press secretary Alfredo Hengari says the government is yet to decide on whether to send troops to the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) following the capture of the city of Goma by M23 rebel forces.<\/b><\/p>\n

Namibia has so far spent N$90 million towards peacekeeping efforts in the Congo.<\/p>\n

President Nangolo Mbumba on Friday reiterated his stance to use diplomacy as a solution to ending the crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Nangolo Mbumba is committed to the peaceful resolution of the conflict and reiterated that position on Friday, 31 January, in his message to the diplomatic community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Mbumba and the Namibian government stand firmly behind the Luanda and Nairobi processes as pathways towards lasting peace in eastern DRC. Any form of escalation is counterproductive,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania have deployed soldiers to the DRC to assist the Congolese army in combating the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group and to protect civilians from violence and human rights abuses.<\/p>\n

South Africa has suffered significant losses in the DRC as rebels make a swift advance towards Goma, a key trading hub on the border with Rwanda.<\/p>\n

At least 13 South African soldiers have been killed since last week, adding to last year\u2019s toll of seven casualties, one of the country\u2019s deadliest combat-related tragedies in recent times.<\/p>\n

Namibia last deployed troops into the Congo in the late 90s after the assassination of Laurent Kabila.<\/p>\n
