Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>FISHERMEN at the coast say the past festive season\u2019s catches were very good compared to the same time last year. According to Hakkie Horn of Ocean Adventures in Swakopmund, snoek were in abundance with a couple of yellowtails also reeled in from the boats.<\/p>\n

\u201cKob catches were average, but very poor the past four days because of sulphur eruptions. Overall, this season was much better for fishing and tourism when compared to last year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Subsistence fishermen catching from favourite spots at Langstrand, Vierkantklip and Pebble Beach agreed, saying they \u201ccould make a living\u201d this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe struggled for a long time, especially during the first Covid lockdown when we were banned from the beaches for two months,\u201d Placido Gertze said. He has been a subsistence fisherman for the past seven years to support his family of eight.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a much better season now, but for the past three days I didn\u2019t get one catch because of the dirty water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Subsistence fishermen solely rely on fishing for an income. They obtain permits from the Ministery of Fisheries and Marine Resources allowing them to catch and sell specified species.<\/p>\n
