Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIAN sprinting sensation Christine Mboma has been crowned the BBC African Sports Personality of the Year for 2021, the first female winner in the award\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

She becomes the second Namibian athlete to be recognised in such a way after Frankie Fredericks won the BBC African Sports Star of the Year award in 1993.<\/p>\n

\u201cI dedicate this BBC award to all Namibians. This is for all the hard work I have done,\u201d Mboma told the BBC.<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old Mboma was the first Namibian woman to ever win an Olympic medal when she took silver in the 200m final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games held last year.<\/p>\n

Mboma beat Kenyan runners Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, South African para-athlete Ntando Mahlangu, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker in the BBC award race.<\/p>\n

Fredericks was one of the first of many Namibians to congratulate Mboma. \u201cCongratulations Christine Mboma for being crowned BBC African Sports Personality of the Year,\u201d he said on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel great and am really proud to be a Namibian, and I thank all the Namibians who voted for me,\u201d Mboma told BBC Sport Africa.<\/p>\n
