{"id":99062,"date":"2026-02-09T17:28:35","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T17:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/gun-laws-invoked-amid-unlawful-police-killings"},"modified":"2026-02-09T18:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T18:55:22","slug":"gun-laws-invoked-amid-unlawful-police-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/gun-laws-invoked-amid-unlawful-police-killings","title":{"rendered":"Gun laws invoked amid unlawful police killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) has urged that the legislature invoke gun laws amid rising cases of weapon misuse by police officers.<\/p>\n<p>PDM parliamentarian Rosa Mbinge-Tjeundo in Parliament said the illegal use of police-issued firearms, particularly incidents where male officers have fatally shot their romantic partners, warrants scrutiny of current gun laws.<\/p>\n<p>This also means examining internal controls and disciplinary mechanisms within police departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese tragic incidents, which continue to happen in different parts of Namibia, raise serious questions about firearm control, off-duty weapon possession, emotional fitness for duty and enforcement of existing police regulations,\u201d she stated in Parliament on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice firearms are intended to protect the public and not to become instruments of domestic violence,\u201d she said. Meanwhile, police are also reportedly involved in drug abuse and drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>PDM\u2019s lawmaker Diederik Vries said reports and arrests linked to drug-related offences in towns such as Rehoboth, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati, Rundu, Katima Mulilo and Windhoek have raised questions about the integrity of some officers entrusted with enforcing our laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when communities, especially the youth, are suffering from the devastating effects of drug abuse, any involvement or protection of criminal drug networks by law enforcement officers represents a direct threat to public trust, national security and the rule of law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>These concerns were raised during the notice of questions for 12 February 2026 and were directed to the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Lucia Iipumbu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Namibia<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia.
