Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to take frontline responsibility in curbing internet fraud by spreading anti-graft messages across campuses.
Olukoyede gave the charge on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in Abuja, during a courtesy visit by a NANS delegation to the Commission’s headquarters.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Commander of the EFCC, CE Michael Nzekwe, the EFCC boss expressed concern over the damaging impact of cybercrime on Nigeria’s image, noting that the trend had increasingly become a tool for laundering illicit funds by politically exposed persons.
“The EFCC cannot do the work alone. We need Nigerians and every stakeholder. As student leaders, you are our partners in taming cybercrime on campuses — you can be our whistleblowers. The trend now is to use cybercriminals to launder money for politically exposed people; let’s look at how to expose these people. We cannot sit back and allow this ugly trend to continue,” he said.
He urged NANS to devise strategies to mobilize and sustain anti-fraud awareness campaigns among students nationwide.
In response, a former National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Bestman Okereafor, lauded Olukoyede for his “transformative leadership and tangible results” in the fight against corruption.
“We have always stood with the Commission and will continue to do so. As partners in progress, we are committed to supporting the EFCC in combating cybercrime, while rejecting propaganda, injustice, and wrongdoing,” Okereafor affirmed.
