Africa-Press – Nigeria. Eight people have lost their lives to a disease attributed to suspected Buruli Ulcer in Malibu Community of Fufore local government area of Adamawa state.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwame, while speaking to newsmen, stated that the situation is “deeply concerning”.

Samples from affected patients, according to the Commissioner, have been collected and dispatched to the National Reference Laboratory for further investigation.

He further explained that health officials have placed the community on close monitoring in order to curb the spread of the disease while awaiting the result of the investigation.

According to him, some of the surviving patients are currently receiving specialised medical attention at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.

He stated that the Adamawa State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners, was taking proactive steps to contain the situation.

He further explained that the state government had already deployed emergency response teams, ongoing awareness campaigns and the provision of medical supplies to be given to the affected community in order to curb the spread of the disease.

The health commissioner appealed for calm, noting that while the deaths were tragic, there was no cause for panic.
