Africa-Press – Nigeria. Chairman of Boki Local Government Council in Cross River State, Beatrice Etta Nyiam, has emphasized that the fight against illicit drugs is a collective responsibility.
She urged community leaders to report drug users and peddlers to law enforcement authorities.
Speaking at a peace-building engagement with stakeholders of Buda Ward in Kachuan Irruan, Nyiam praised the ward’s history of peaceful coexistence despite boundary tensions in Boki, but warned that drug abuse threatens to undermine such stability.
“I charge you as leaders to report anyone engaging in illicit drug abuse to the police or NDLEA.
“Offenders, irrespective of gender or age, must face the law,” she said.
She assured that the Council would strengthen partnerships with communities to find lasting solutions to drug menace.
Vice Chairman, Lawrence Akan, added that landlords who rent houses to drug dealers worsen the problem, while retired AIG and Governor’s Security Adviser, Mr. John Abang, emphasized that communities must take ownership of guiding their youths and working closely with security agencies.
Also speaking, Commander of the Buda Vigilante, Comd. Osang Abua Peter, also raised alarm over the rising rate of drug use in the ward, describing it as the most pressing security concern.
The meeting was attended by officials of the NDLEA, Civil Defence Corps, community leaders, youth groups and women leaders, all pledging to support the Council’s campaign against drug abuse.
