Pregnant Woman Killed as Water Tanker Collapses in Jigawa

Africa-Press – Nigeria. Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon in Zugai village, Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State, when an overhead water tank collapsed on residents who had gathered to fetch water, killing four women, including a pregnant woman, and injuring others.

The tank, which supplies water from a solar-powered borehole, reportedly gave way while dozens of villagers were standing beneath it.

An eyewitness, Imrana Miko, told newsmen that the tank suddenly crashed while the victims were fetching water.

According to him, “Three people died on the spot, while many others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.”

Another resident attributed the tragedy to structural weakness, saying the supporting pillars had deteriorated under the weight of the fully filled tank.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Maranda Development Association, Comrade Musa Lawal, described the scene as heartbreaking.

The Chairman of Roni Local Government Council, Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni, also confirmed the deaths, explaining that strong winds contributed to the collapse.

“The incident was caused by a strong wind while people were busy fetching water. The wind pushed the tank, and it collapsed on the people,” he said.

He added that the council had taken responsibility for all medical bills of the injured.

He, however, sympathized with the victims and prayed for eternal rest for the deceased.
