Africa-Press – Nigeria. Former All Progressives Congress, APC, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Timi Frank, has called for the immediate release of Guinea-Bissau opposition leader, Domingos Simões Pereira and the announcement of the country’s election results.
In a statement on Saturday, Frank condemned the reported coup as “a dangerous assault on democracy,” alleging that it was part of a coordinated political-military plot to halt a transition of power after indications suggested Pereira of the PAIGC was leading against incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
He noted that reports linking General Biagino Nhanca to the crisis further fuel suspicion that the military intervention was staged to obstruct the electoral outcome rather than safeguard the state.
“What we are seeing is not a coup but a calculated civilian-military conspiracy to overturn the people’s verdict,” said Frank, who was recently appointed Senior Advisor to the Global Friendship City Association (GFCA), USA.
He warned that failure of the international community to act would embolden leaders to subvert democracy, stressing that Africa must resist any attempt to use manufactured crises to avoid electoral defeat.
“If this goes unchallenged, it becomes a manual for dictators: lose an election, announce a coup, detain the opponent, and suspend results,” he said.
Frank urged ECOWAS, the AU, the EU, the United States, and other pro-democracy bodies to pressure authorities in Bissau to release the results and restore full civilian rule. He also called on Western partners to impose sanctions, freeze assets, and halt grants linked to the current administration.
“The people of Guinea-Bissau have spoken through the ballot. Their voice must be respected. Release the results and free Domingos Simões Pereira,” he stated.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who observed the election, also demanded on Friday that the results be made public.
