Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Osun State Police Command has announced that the ban on fireworks remains in force as Christmas celebrations approach.
The police command also warned residents against the use of fireworks and other explosive devices.
The warning was issued in a public service statement by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on Wednesday.
The statement noted that the command has put in place “a robust and elaborate security arrangement for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
The command also highlighted the dangers and security implications of detonating knockouts, bangers, and pyrotechnics during the festive period.
According to the statement, “the loud sounds produced by such explosives are often mistaken for gunshots or improvised explosive devices, creating panic, tension and avoidable security alerts at a time of heightened national security concerns.
“The use of knockouts, bangers and fireworks in residential areas, near hospitals, places of worship, markets, motor parks, along major roads and wherever is strictly prohibited.”
Gotan, who urged parents and guardians to restrain their children from using fireworks, noted that such actions could cause unnecessary alarm among the public.
“Parents and guardians are urged to prevail on their children and wards against the usage as it could trigger panic,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police also directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit heads to intensify patrols across the state to enforce the ban.
“Officers had been instructed to deal firmly but professionally with anyone found detonating knockouts thereby causing public disturbance or apprehension,” he said.
The command warned that anyone whose actions lead to public disorder, injury, or property damage as a result of using fireworks would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
It assured residents of adequate security coverage throughout the Yuletide and beyond, reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and order in all parts of the state.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or acts capable of breaching the peace to the police via two dedicated phone lines 08039537995 and 08123823981,” the statement concluded.
