Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation following a viral video in which a truck driver in Ijebu-Ode alleged that he was pursued and assaulted by men impersonating police officers.

According to the driver, the attackers, who claimed to be part of a task force, chased him around 4 a.m., damaged his vehicle, and threatened his life.

In the video, he appeared distressed, insisting that he was being targeted for no reason and describing the men as both armed and aggressive.

“They have been pursuing me with guns and stones. They claimed to be task force, but they are thieves. Come to my aid, IG of Police, Nigerians, please come to my aid.”

“They have been pursuing me since I got to Ijebu-Ode. The police officers are drunk,” he said, pointing to a man he alleged was responsible for stopping him.

The footage shows the attackers assaulting the driver while he films the encounter.

His truck window was smashed, and several of the men were visibly armed.

One individual wore a t-shirt commonly associated with police personnel, heightening the driver’s confusion and fear.

“It is this particular one that stopped me. This one is a police officer. Look at who they called police officer,” he said, attempting to document the ordeal.

In response, the Ogun State Police Command, through Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi, clarified on Sunday that the man in question is not a member of the Nigerian Police Force.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms that the individual referenced is not an officer of the Nigeria Police Force.”

“Verification is ongoing in collaboration with relevant authorities to ascertain the person’s identity, as investigations and inter-agency engagements continue,” Babaseyi stated.

The police assured that the command is treating the matter seriously and urged members of the public to report similar cases to enable prompt action.

The truck driver also alleged that the men tried to force him to stop while his vehicle was in motion, endangering both himself and other road users.

“I was asked to stop while on motion. Why would I stop?” he said.
