Community Urges Security Amid Militias Violating Accord

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Karimjo community of Karim Lamido local government council in Taraba State has called on governments at all levels, particularly the Taraba State Government, to urgently intervene and provide security following renewed attacks allegedly carried out by suspected militias.

The appeal comes amid allegations that the attacks persist despite a peace accord signed by ethnic groups in the area in December 2025.

In a statement on Monday signed by its national president, Uba Ibrahim, the Karimjo community described the agreement as ineffective, alleging that it has failed to halt violence against its people.

The community noted that intercommunal tensions in the local government council had earlier prompted the state government to organise a peace and reconciliation meeting in Jen.

The meeting, as disclosed by them, was chaired by a former acting governor of the state and attended by representatives of the Karimjo, Wurkun and other ethnic groups in the area.

Stakeholders reportedly agreed to coexist peacefully, as a Peace and Reconciliation Committee was subsequently established by the state government with a mandate to engage community leaders and youths, monitor compliance with the accord, address grievances through dialogue and legal means, and ensure lasting peace in the area.

Despite these measures, the Karimjo community alleged that the peace agreement has been violated on multiple occasions.

According to the community, the first incident occurred about two weeks after the signing of the accord, when a Karimjo man, identified as Mai Ungwa Iliya Saidu, was allegedly killed while supervising his cassava farm after a church service. The community said it chose not to retaliate in order to respect the peace process.

The second incident, according to them, occurred on February 7, 2026, when suspected militias allegedly launched an attack on Ungwa Rimi, a Karimjo settlement, around 11:30 am.

The attackers reportedly set more than 50 houses ablaze, forcing residents to flee.

The community described the incident as a major breach of the peace accord.

The Karimjo community said both incidents were reported to relevant security agencies and the Taraba State Government, but alleged that no investigations have been carried out and no arrests made so far.

They expressed concern that the lack of action could undermine public confidence in the government’s commitment to justice and equal protection under the law.

While condemning the attacks and destruction of property, the Karimjo community said it has continued to exercise restraint and has not resorted to self-help.

The community reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and the rule of law.

The community appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas, the Taraba State House of Assembly and security agencies to order a comprehensive investigation into the alleged murder of Mai Ungwa Iliya Saidu and the 7 February attack on Ungwa Rimi.

They also called for the identification, arrest and prosecution of all those involved, stressing that no ethnic group should be above the law or enjoy immunity due to political influence.
