Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Lagos State Government has announced a month-long partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to allow for critical rehabilitation works on failed sections of the road.
The partial closure, which affects both inbound and outbound lanes, is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and will last until Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning a period of four weeks.
The development was disclosed in an announcement made available to our correspondent and signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
According to the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the rehabilitation exercise, being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works, will cover the stretch from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate. The project is aimed at restoring damaged sections of the expressway while ensuring continuous traffic movement during the construction period.
To minimise disruption to commuters, the state government explained that the rehabilitation will be executed in two phases, with traffic diversion and lane-by-lane repairs applied at different stages of the work.
The first phase will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway, covering the section from U-Turn Bus Stop inward Sango Tollgate. This phase is scheduled to run for three weeks, from Wednesday, February 11 to Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
During this period, traffic from Lagos and Abule-Egba heading toward Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the active construction zone. Rehabilitation will be carried out on one lane at a time, after which traffic will be redirected to the completed section while work continues on the remaining half.
Motorists travelling on the Lagos-bound carriageway during the first phase are expected to experience uninterrupted traffic flow.
The second phase of the project will focus on Lagos-bound traffic, covering the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction. This phase will last one week, from Wednesday, March 4 to Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
During the second phase, traffic from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate inward Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted through one half of the road, about 20 metres away from the construction area. Normal traffic flow will be restored once vehicles are redirected to the rehabilitated section. As in the first phase, construction will be carried out in halves, with traffic redirected as work progresses.
Motorists travelling on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway during the second phase will continue to enjoy uninterrupted movement.
The Lagos State Government assured road users that adequate traffic management measures would be deployed throughout the duration of the project to ensure safety and ease of movement along the corridor.
In an advisory, the Ministry of Transportation urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic signage, and cooperate fully with traffic officials deployed to manage the diversions.
The ministry also appealed for the patience and understanding of the motoring public, stressing that the rehabilitation works are essential and are being undertaken in the interest of all road users.
