Africa-Press – Nigeria. The National Union of Taraba State Students, NUTSS, has condemned the alleged physical assault of a student by a security officer at Taraba State University.
In an official press statement, the Union described the incident as unacceptable, stressing that no student should be subjected to violence or humiliation under any circumstances.
Signed by the union’s Vice President, Yusuf Yahaya Inuwa, copy of which was also made available to the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu, the Union emphasized that even when a student is accused of misconduct, established disciplinary procedures and due process must be followed in line with the university’s rules and regulations.
According to the statement, security personnel are tasked with maintaining order and ensuring safety on campus, not administering punishment.
The Union noted that if lecturers are prohibited from physically assaulting students, security officers should equally demonstrate professionalism, restraint, and respect in their dealings with students.
The Union has called on the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of Security, and the university management to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action. It stressed that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
While pursuing the matter through legal and institutional channels, the Union urged students to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid any form of violence or retaliation that could escalate tensions or undermine their cause.
The Union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of all Taraba State students.
