Africa-Press – Nigeria. African media outlets have reported that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu will contest the presidential elections scheduled for January 2027 after winning the nomination of the ruling “Progressive Congress” party in the primaries.

Tinubu faces the upcoming election amid a divided opposition and ongoing economic and living pressures in Africa’s most populous country.

Having assumed the presidency in 2023, Tinubu has expressed his desire to secure a second four-year term. In the primaries, he faced competitor Stanley Osifo, while the ruling party considered the internal process a reflection of its commitment to a democratic path in selecting its candidate.

Tinubu approaches the upcoming election backed by the expanding influence of his party at the state level, as the “Progressive Congress” currently controls 31 out of 36 states, up from 21 states when Tinubu was elected president in 2023, following a wave of defections and political shifts from opposition parties to the ruling party.

According to African media, the anticipated electoral battle is intertwined with the pressing economic situation in the country. Since taking office, Tinubu has launched economic reforms aimed at attracting investments and improving economic performance; however, the country has faced a sharp rise in fuel prices and living costs. Reports indicate that inflation reached 30% in 2024 and remained around 15% at the beginning of 2026, while fuel prices quadrupled over four years.

Attention is turning in the coming days to the Nigerian opposition parties, which are also preparing to select their candidates, as the opposition appears divided against the ruling party that has strengthened its political presence in the states.
