Africa-Press – Nigeria. Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Adewole Adebayo, says Oyo State Government has what it takes to investigate the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Adebayo noted that the state government can do better than the United Nations in the unraveling the cause of the incident and punish the culprits in accordance with the law.
He said: “I think Oyo State has all it takes, much better than the United Nations or African Union or anybody to look into the matter. And I would recommend Oyo Governor use the institutions of the state to set up an enquiry and a criminal investigation.
“This is because the kidnappers and killers have violated Oyo State laws by coming to the state and committing felonies within, which we will now include kidnapping, conspiracy, murder, and all that.
“These are all laws of our state, for which Governor Seyi Makinde was elected to enforce. He has an Attorney-General. He has sufficient capacity within the state to set up an inquiry and also a criminal investigation, and to the extent that the state laws have been violated. He has the power to ensure that he gives the support to law enforcement in the state.
“So I don’t see any reason we should refrain from using the powers that are available to us to govern our people. I think the Oyo State should look inwards.
“The Federal Government should also remember that Oriire Community School is not the entire Nigeria. There are still many families facing threats and kidnappings in Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Benue and Plateau states.
“So I think we should focus on making sure that this success in dealing with one incident, is now routine.”
