This was disclosed by the data-driven insights provider ” Stears” while unveiling its Pan-African inflation forecasts. It projected that Nigeria’s annual inflation rate is set to climb steadily until year-end, culminating at around 30 percent, a level not attained since the country’s modern Democratic era.

The firm stated that its forecasts are based on trusted econometric tools that consider a myriad of factors driving inflation, from general to country-specific dynamics.

Fadekemi Abiru is the head of insights of Stairs. He shades more light on Nigeria’s Inflation situation.

“In September, we saw the exchange rate premium -the differential between official and parallel rates to 25.2 percent which is a significant increase from what it was in August.

We expect this gap to keep widening and exerting further inflationary pressures unless we see significant dollar inflows in the economy. We have had a heavy and prolonged rainy season, which has affected the harvest. Following the recent release of Nigeria’s September 2023 inflation data, the country’s forecasts have been prioritized, with Kenya’s projections scheduled for early November and forecasts for other African nations coming in early 2024” Abiru said.

He added that the forecast aims to guide corporates, Professionals, and policymakers in their short-to-medium-term pricing, Investment, and policy decisions. He also said inflation forecasts spanning from October 2023 to December 2024 include both average and year-end predictions for 2023 and 2024.

Nigeria’s inflation rate is one of the highest in the world

An estimated four million people were pushed into poverty between January and May 2023 because of the worming cost of living.

According to the World Bank, the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation and unification of the exchange rate system will continue to increase the inflationary pressure in the country in the near term and erode the purchasing power of the average Nigerian.

The Tinubu administration implemented a series of reforms that included the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation and unification of the exchange rate system.

Petroleum prices have more than tripled since the subsidies were lifted at the end of May. The naira has weakened by nearly 40 percent against the US dollar since the mid-June devaluation. Although these measures are intended to improve the fiscal and external accounts of the nation, their inflationary effects in the near term can erode the purchasing power of households and weigh on economic activity” World Bank Africa Pulse report stated

The World Bank report added that Nigeria’s inflation rate is now above its projection of 25 percent for 2023.

In its recent economic outlook report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF)predicted that high inflation is expected to slow Nigeria’s economic growth to 2.9 percent in 2023

Controlling inflation is the only solution to the critical economic hardship

Ibrahim Garba Maryam also known as I G Maryam is a human right activist and financial affairs analyst. He said for the government to control inflation there must be mechanisms in place.

“In Nigeria, we take inflation as a means of survival, what you buy today, you can not afford tomorrow so that is the number one key problem of inflation,” Ibrahim Garba said.

The analyst added that the removal of fuel subsidies by the present administration under President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is another factor that makes inflation grow daily as the government didn’t put measures in place to control the situation through good policies and programs such as providing subsidies for transportation means as it pledge when it removes the fuel subsidy on May 29th this year(2023).

I G Maryam also described the fuel subsidy removal as not economically wise as there is no mechanism to track the cost of fuel, transportation, and cost of deliverance.

“It could be recallEd that late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua was able to come up with some measures by reducing the cost of transportation where rails were used in transporting fuel to the different parts of Nigeria.

This government has no direction, we are buying this fuel at the dollar rate and we are doing deregulation of the dollar exchange rate, it keeps going up as there is no static rate for foreign exchange rates” The activist stated.

However with the kind of inflation witnessed by Nigerians at the moment and the prediction of its possible increase the lives of millions will be in danger as the majority of the citizens can not afford normal food, health care services, rent, and transportation to their working and business places.

This situation is the kind of problem that needs the urgent attention of the government at all levels to avoid the possible repercussions which can put the whole country into an economic downfall.

Also, the government needs to analyze the World Bank and IMF data critically as the two World Financial Institutions were at the forefront of advising the Nigerian government to remove fuel subsidies and they are now predicting that millions of Nigerians are sinking into more poverty

Another means that the government needs to apply is to listen to the Nigerian economic experts from within the country seek their advice and engage them to come up with possible internal solutions to avoid heavy reliance on the World Bank and IMF statistics which are mostly anti-masses.

It is also imperative for the National Assembly to give priority to oversight functions, particularly to the sectors that funds are appropriated for infrastructural projects such as roads and rail lines that connect the food-producing areas of the country and also track the distribution of palliative provided by the Federal government to ensure the right people benefited from it

The civil society also has a role to play in putting more pressure on the government to do what is needed at this critical time.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

By Abba Hamisu Sani Africa-Press – Nigeria.
