Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Senate has charged the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to probe the implementation of the $500 million contract for the installation of Close Circuit Television, CCTV, cameras in the FCT.<\/p>\n

The resolution was taken following the adoption of a motion on Galadimawa Kidnapping Tragedy by Senator Ned Nwoko at plenary on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Nwoko expressed concerns over the recent kidnapping incident in the Galadimawa area of the FCT, involving his Senior Legislative Aide, Chris Agidy.<\/p>\n

He said two weeks ago, a distressing incident unfolded, where 19 individuals were forcefully taken from their homes in Galadimawa.<\/p>\n

Nwoke said, upon receiving the distressing news, he contacted the Commissioner of Police who swiftly activated the OC Anti-Kidnapping team to secure the release of those abducted.<\/p>\n

He lamented that distressing updates from reliable police sources confirmed that out of the 19 individuals abducted, 12 have been killed, while seven remained in the custody of the kidnappers.<\/p>\n

The lawmaker said: \u201cTheir lines remain inactive, hindering direct communication and negotiation efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to security operatives, efforts are still focused on securing the remaining individuals held captive from the forested area approximately 100 km away, despite the daunting challenges faced in reaching the kidnappers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we await further updates from the authorities, we remain resolute in our pursuit of a swift and safe resolution to this distressing situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its resolution, the Senate called for a joint operation involving the Army, Police and DSS to intensify efforts towards rescuing the kidnap victims.<\/p>\n

The lawmakers also directed Wike to revisit the installation of CCTV contract, and make the contractor accountable.<\/p>\n

The Senate also called on the Inspector General of Police to increase surveillance patrols in Abuja to prevent kidnapping.<\/p>\n

The Senate also called on the IGP to conduct a thorough investigation into cases of kidnapping in Abuja.<\/p>\n

It also mandated its committees on security to enforce robust security measures and prevail on security agencies to consider installation of CCTV cameras within specific areas in the FCT and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n
