Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ogun State government has commenced the demolition of shanties and temporary structures erected by cow sellers and other street traders in Kara, Isheri, OPIC axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, for constituting environmental infractions.<\/p>\n

Leader of the Ogun State Environmental Special Taskforce and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Farook Akintunde, said the exercise was carried out after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum earlier given to the street traders to vacate the area.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, had told the cow sellers and traders near the Kara bridge to vacate the area, saying it was the directive of the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.<\/p>\n

According to Akintunde, the continuous presence of shanties in the axis despite several warnings and abatement notices constitutes nuisance to the environment.<\/p>\n

He said occupants of the shanties had not only debased the area, but had also turned it to rest rooms by engaging in open defecation.<\/p>\n

Akintunde added that the exercise became expedient as all the shanties and the makeshift structures have become risks to law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n

According to him, the state government is also not unaware that criminals have turned the area into their hideout.<\/p>\n

His said: \u201cOgun state government will not fold its hands and watch few elements constitute themselves to security threats to our people while camouflaging to be traders in their illegal shanties and makeshift structures.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe state government will immediately green the recovered areas with beautiful grasses and lawns which all residents of the state will be proud of on completion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s aide further warned the displaced street traders not to test the will of the state government by attempting to stage a comeback.<\/p>\n
