Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The federal government has called attention to the dangers of latent Tuberculosis within the population and advocated for a multisectoral approach towards uncovering hidden cases to reduce the burden and spread of the infection.<\/p>\n

The government, however, noted that only innovative solutions developed through stakeholder collaboration could sustain the fight against Tuberculosis.<\/p>\n

The Director of Public Health at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Chukwuma Anyaike, made the assertion at the National Consultations on Public\u2013Private Partnership and Post-United Nation High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on Tuberculosis, organized by the Stop TB Partnership in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

He noted that a majority of Tuberculosis cases among the population are those who may have been infected by the bacteria over a long period but whose immune system suppressed the infection.<\/p>\n

He explained that the infection, however, manifests and is debilitating as soon as the carrier\u2019s immune system becomes weak or vulnerable.<\/p>\n

Dr Anyaike warned that Nigeria, at the moment, requires innovation in diagnosis to aid the detection of latent TB, but maintains that the innovation can only be acquired through private sector partnerships, such as the Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Advocacy Project.<\/p>\n

He, however, noted that sustaining active case-finding through the PPP, can help ensure that individuals commence treatment before the disease manifests, especially in rural communities where the healthcare system is weak or inadequate.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201dOur drive at the moment is trying to find those with latent Tuberculosis to start treatment immediately because we do not know what will happen tomorrow.<\/p>\n

\u201dAs a national program and as the federal ministry of health, one of the strategies we are thinking about is to get the best diagnostic platform where we can detect latent TB.<\/p>\n

\u201dThose in the private or manufacturing sector can support us with diagnostics gadgets.<\/p>\n

\u201dAnd we often say that the best intervention is prevention, when you prevent you cut costs, especially as Nigerians have poor health-seeking behaviour.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe hallmark of intervention in Tuberculosis is early detection and appropriate treatment, if we waste time in detection, it, therefore, means it will keep getting transmitted in the community and more people in the population will be infected\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dOne unintervened case has the capacity to infect not less than 15 people in a year, so that means there is this drive to have early detection and placing them on treatment and breaking the chain of transmission.<\/p>\n
