No good politician would support that kind of thing but we keep quiet. I told everybody to keep quiet.

Let me tell you, you have 31 members in the House of Assembly, 27 are against you.

Asked if he sanctioned the impeachment against his successor, the FCT minister responded, If they are impeaching you, referring to his successor, did you call me?

Assuming I am the one who plotted your impeachment for example, did you call me and say, ‘Sir they want to impeach me.’He said.

The minister accused the governor of sending people to go and burn part of the assembly complex as a way of fighting off the impeachment plot.

“Impeachment process is not a one-day affair Then you raised ethnic politics. When the law speaks, hungry militants, ethnicity will run away, the law has not spoken,” Mr Wike said.

Despite glaring evidence of a feud with Mr Fubara, the minister said he did not have a problem with the governor but that he was only asking him (Fubara) not to destroy the political structure that brought him to power.

“I will not let that happen,” Mr Wike said. He said all the people who cannot fight him are rallying round Mr Fubara but vowed to defeat them at the appropriate time.

“First of all you have shown Nigerians that this is who you are. Some people even pretend for one or two years before showing their true colours but Fubra declared himself in three months.

Is Wike paying the price of his deed against Ameachi ?

Mr Wike dismissed suggestions that he may be going through the same experience he caused Rotimi Amaechi to go through when Mr Amaechi was governor of Rivers and he, a State minister in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Mr Wike was the chief of staff to Mr Amaechi when the latter was the Rivers governor but both men became rivals when Mr Wike became minister under President Jonathan, and have been engaged in a perennial political battle till now.

Federal Government clear webs on Rivers Political crisis

The Federal Government said it has no hand in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, his loyalists, and Governor Similaye Fubara.

The government emphatically declared that Wike’s position is not shared by the Tinubu”s government.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in a chat with State House correspondents after briefing on the outcomes of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the President on Wednesday 13 December 2023.

He maintained that the federal government has no hand in creating the crisis, which has seen the FCT minister and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly pitted against Governor Fubara.

It could be recall that 27 of the lawmakers loyal to the minister had announced their defection from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that led to their seats being declared vacant by the factional group of about five members loyal to the state governor.

Asked whether the federal government shares Wike’s position on the matter as a member of the federal cabinet, the information minister stated: “Well, he is a federal cabinet member; he is involved in the situation in the state. That cannot be a federal government position. How can it be the federal government’s position?”The Minister stated

Idris stressed that the federal government is keen to ensure peace and tranquillity in every part of the country, including Rivers.

“Well, the federal government is always interested in the well-being of all the states, and in that direction, the federal government will always align with everyone in Nigeria to make sure that there is peace and tranquillity in all parts of this country.

But you know that what has happened in Rivers is not a creation of the federal government. It is a political problem that is brewing in the state.

Of course, the government will ensure that there is peace and stability for all Nigerians, including River State, but you can’t say that this is a creation of the federal government. The federal government never had any hand in creating that problem.” The Minister of Information added
However this type of crisis between former and serving governors is not a new thing in Nigeria ,particularly in Rivers State ,as the same Wike fought his political godfathers Rotimi Amaechi to the level that ,he has to leave the ruling party -PDP then under President Jonathan and side with the then opposition party -APC.

Many political commentators are of the view that it is just a history repeating itself.

On the allegation that Wike requested for a huge amount of money from the Rivers State government, they described this as the impunity to the highest order and charged governor Fubra to remain unchanged in his action of not allowing Wike to syphon rivers resources even after leaving the state government.

From Wike’s statement on the allegation of requesting money from his successor, his response was not showing rumours but a sense of arrogance as he kept trying to belittle governor Fubra.

Governor Fubra ,is making an effort to protect himself from the orchestrated impeachment move by Rivers Assembly. The allegation against him of bombing and distributing part of the complex ,if found true, is also anti- democratic and should be seen as a myopic means of halting the move.

This crisis between former Rivers State governor Nnyesom Wike and his successor Fubra should serve as a lesson for the governors that want to remain as godfathers controlling the affairs of their state after leaving office.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

By- Abba Hamisu Sani Africa-Press – Nigeria.
