Nigeria also supplies two-thirds of the country’s electricity.

All of that has been halted for months, and millions of citizens and businesses have been struggling to get by. These reasons make it difficult for the citizens of Niger Republic to survive. In reality, they are just the victims of elites’ actions (Military coups).

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso’s new economic alliance

The three neighbouring states that are all ruled by military juntas are at odds with the rest of the Economic Community of West African States in a move to abandon the eight-member West African Monetary Union and adopt a new currency would further isolate Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, who have called their union the Alliance of Sahel states (ABS).

The three countries and five others in the region currently use the West African CFA franc, a currency that is pegged to the euro which critics see as a relic from French colonial rule.

The alliance of Sahel States was a defence alliance before, it also involved an economic alliance.

In November this year (2023) the three finance ministers of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso issued a joint statement recommending that a committee of experts be set to study the question of an economic and monetary union. They also recommended the creation of a joint stabilisation fund and investment bank, among other measures.

By all indications, these countries are withdrawing themselves from the activities of the regional organisation as its leadership-sanctions Niger Republic with different austerity measures.

Tinubu advocates for good governance as an antidote to coups in West Africa

Recently President Tinubu implored his counterparts in the region to prioritise good governance and collective prosperity as an essential tool to prevent unconstitutional changes of government.

The ECOWAS leader stated this during the recent body’s summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Governments.

Bola Tinubu said that good governance can help prevent coups in the West African sub-region.

The Nigerian President while speaking at the 64th ordinary session of the ECOWAS meeting in Abuja the capital city of Nigeria on 10th of December 2023.

Ajuri Ngelale is the Special adviser to the President Tinubu on Media and Publicity. He said Tinubu also used the occasion to applaud President George Weah of Liberia for conceding victory and congratulating his opponent during the last presidential election in Liberia.

The President”s Media aid stated this in a press statement issued on 10th December 2023.

“Governance is not just a fundamental commitment; it is also an avenue to address the concerns of our citizens, to improve their quality of life, and create a stable environment conducive to the achievement of sustainable development.

By providing good governance that tackles the challenges of poverty, inequality, and other concerns of the people, we would have succeeded in addressing some of the root causes of military interventions in civilian processes in our region,” the President stated.

Imposing sanctions and its implication on the Countries under Military junta

While recounting the decisions taken by West African leaders to further strengthen the region’s democratic achievements and uphold the right of the people to elect the leaders of their choice, the President said the bloc has outlined specific measures to be taken against any member state opting for an unconstitutional change of government.

“While the imposition of punitive sanctions may pose challenges, it is important to underscore that the struggle to protect the fundamental liberties of our Community’s Citizens must be upheld and respected.

To this end, I would like to reiterate the imperative of re-engaging with the countries under military rule based on realistic and short transition plans that can deliver democracy and good governance to the innocent populations in those countries.

On our part, we should be prepared to provide them with technical and material support, to ensure the achievement of these strategic goals,” he said.

Standing Ovation for the Liberian President George Weah

President Tinubu invited leaders at the summit and other participants to give a standing ovation to President Weah. He also acknowledged the presence of former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, who in 2015, displayed a similar commitment to democratic ideals after losing his re-election to the opposition candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

I would also like to seize this opportunity to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of the Republic of Liberia for the successful conduct of the presidential election, widely judged to be free, fair, and credible.

Let me also commend my brother and colleague, His Excellency George Weah, for his exemplary leadership and conduct throughout the electoral process.

By accepting defeat and congratulating his opponent, President Weah has left a legacy to be emulated by politicians in our region and beyond,” he said.

Respond against the Sahel States alliance formed by Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso

Tinubu described this move as distracting and emphasised the commitment to pursuing ECOWAS integration.

“The phantom pus back Alliance appears intended to divert our attention from our mutual belief in and commitment to democracy and good governance that will impact the lives of our people.

We refuse to be distracted from pursuing the collective dreams, aspirations, and the noble path of ECOWAS integration as it is laid out in our institutional and legal frameworks.

I take this opportunity to also emphasise that despite the numerous challenges faced in our region, ECOWAS has achieved significant milestones for the betterment of our community.

ECOWAS activities have always been people-oriented, with a future of raising the living standard of our people. We have to do that through a relentless focus on qualitative service delivery and good governance,” he added.

On the Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau

On the recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, the ECOWAS Chairman asked fellow leaders to pay attention to protecting democracy, reiterating ECOWAS’ zero tolerance to unconstitutional changes of government.

“I urge all of us to stand strong and be highly committed in the face of any challenge in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau. The message must go down clearly that we support a democratically elected government, not an unconstitutional exercise.

The re-elected president of Sierra Leone is present here. We are saying loud and clear that we are with you.

Without let or hindrance, democracy will win, if we fight for it, and we will fight for democracy,” the President stated.

Babangida Lamido is an International businessMan and Public Affairs analyst. He said Tinubu lacks the capacity to lead an organisation like ECOWAS.

Africa is a continent that has vast mineral resources while other continents like Europe and America have already exhausted their mineral deposits, so their strategy is to exploit Africa by using its leaders.

He added that Tinubu is just acting on the script written by France ,England and America at the detriment of the ECOWAS member states.

Babangida Lamido said Bola Tinubu’s style of leadership is creating division among the members of the regional body instead of strengthening unity and economic prosperity among them which is the sole aim of their coming together.

The analyst also stated that punishing Niger Republic citizens with Sanctions for cutting their source of electricity and food supply is not the right decision as it has a direct bearing on the masses which suffered double effects of the coup d’etat and sanctions by ECOWAS.

The Babangida Lamido African continent is the future of the world economy ,hence the continent needs capable leadership that can bring positive change to Africa in general.

However, the kind of leadership exhibited by Tinubu as ECOWAS chairman and the undiplomatic approach towards Niger”s junta and other countries under military rule ; Mali and Burkina Faso created a division within the Union.

Tinubu needs to change his approach towards tackling the issues affecting the ECOWAS member states particularly when it comes to coup d’etat and focus on economic integration and ensure free movement of goods and services.

He also needs to be more democratic in tackling the regional problems as he claims to be the proponent of democracy ,instead of using cohesion.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

By- Abba Hamisu Sani Africa-Press – Nigeria.
