{"id":110408,"date":"2024-02-14T10:22:44","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T09:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/traders-residents-groan-as-fire-ravages-oyo-markets"},"modified":"2024-02-14T13:08:25","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T12:08:25","slug":"traders-residents-groan-as-fire-ravages-oyo-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/traders-residents-groan-as-fire-ravages-oyo-markets","title":{"rendered":"Traders, residents groan as fire ravages Oyo markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Muideen Mustapha is one of the tailors in Sango Market, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.<\/p>\n<p>Mustapha, who is usually referred to as Isekolowo among his customers, has been in the business for almost two decades.<\/p>\n<p>He has invested much on his tailoring business and has carved a niche for himself as customers\u2019 delight.<\/p>\n<p>The middle-aged man\u2019s investments have been destroyed as a result of a fire incident.<\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST reports that the market is a multi-commodity market where farm produce, building materials, finished goods, and food items are traded.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the traders, artisans such as carpenters and tailors like Mustapha can also be found in the market plying their trades.<\/p>\n<p>The fire incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 4th February, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Mustapha narrated that the incident had rendered him helpless.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cMy name is Muideen Mustapha, a fashion designer, alias Isekolowo. We left this place on Saturday, but around 2:40 am on Sunday, there was a high voltage of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only God that knows where it started, but it was due to high voltage. We have been experiencing a poor supply of electricity for about three days before the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the security men that raised an alarm. He woke up other people and they called our Public Relations Officer who then called Agidigbo FM; they called the police and the fire service. They all came to help us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo cut the long story short, 24 shops were burnt completely. We thank God that no life was lost to the fire incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost property worth millions of naira. I have lost all my things, machines, clothes of customers and money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to appeal to the government and well to do individuals to assist us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another victim of the fire incident, Mr. Abdullah Ajao, while speaking with DAILY POST, appealed to the government and individuals to assist them.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI am a meat seller. I am one of the people affected by the fire incident. What caused it was the high voltage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lost many things. We want the government and well to do individuals to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No fewer than five fire incidents have been recorded in the state in the last one month.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the Sango Market fire incident, a similar incident has been recorded at Amuloko Market in Ona Ara local government area of the state.<\/p>\n<p>About ten shops were razed when the incident occured on Saturday, 20th January, 2024. Goods and property worth millions of naira were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, goods and property worth millions of naira were destroyed as a result of a fire incident that ravaged a section of Ajegunle Market in Oyo.<\/p>\n<p>It was learnt that a vast part of the gari processing area of the market was mainly affected.<\/p>\n<p>A source said that the inferno might have started from a frying cubicle not properly extinguished at the close of production.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred on Tuesday, 23rd January, 2024.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fire guts INEC area office in Ibadan<\/b><\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST reports that one of the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ibadan was also razed during the period under review.<\/p>\n<p>The fire outbreak was recorded at the Ibadan South East Local Government Area office of the commission.<\/p>\n<p>The incident, according to sources, occurred around 10:30 am on Friday, 26th January, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr. Adeniran Rahmon Tella, confirmed the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Tella, in a short statement made available to DAILY POST, maintained that the cause of the incident has not been revealed.<\/p>\n<p><b>Many shops affected as fire ravages furniture shop<\/b><\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST also gathered that many traders are still counting their losses as a result of the fire incident that ravaged their shops in the Soka area of Ibadan.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred at Ire Akari estate in Soka, Oluyole local government area.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said that the fire incident, which started at a furniture shop, occurred around 3 pm on Monday, 29th January, 2024.<\/p>\n<p><b>Orita Aperin market traders count losses<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Our correspondent also gathered that many shops at Orita Aperin Market were destroyed as a result of a fire incident.<\/p>\n<p>Property worth millions of naira were destroyed as a result of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occured in January this year.<\/p>\n<p><b>30-year-old man dies as fire ravages mechanic workshop in Ojoo<\/b><\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST gathered that a 30-year-old welder, simply identified as Alabi Quadri, reportedly died as a result of fire incident that occurred at a mechanic workshop in the Ojoo area of Akinyele local government area.<\/p>\n<p>Four other people were hospitalised as a result of varying degrees of injuries they sustained as a result of the incident, which occured on Saturday, 3rd February, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It was learnt that Quadri died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he was rushed for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>About six trailers within the workshop were burnt completely.<\/p>\n<p>One of the affected mechanics, Segun Ajiboye, confirmed that about six trailers were affected.<\/p>\n<p><b>Many people using fire without protection, safety measures \u2013 DG, Fire Academy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Director General, Fire Academy Nigeria, Professor Charles Israel Afolabi, when contacted, said that many people were using fire without protection and safety measures.<\/p>\n<p>Afolabi told DAILY POST that cases of fire incidents were increasing due to the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>He enjoined the government to employ more youths in the fire industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtreme weather is becoming more common and destructive because of climate change. More people are using fire without putting into consideration fire protection and fire safety. There is not enough education to the public about fire safety, the causes and prevention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government needs to close the skills gap in the fire industry; they need to recruit young abled youth to assist the firefighters, many are becoming old without re-skilling and need better incentives and better equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany fire users are careless about fire, they are responsible for many outbreaks. There are also some arsonists causing deliberate fires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a nutshell, the state needs a strong fire awareness campaign, through both the print and electronic media and the training of Fire waders to supplement the efforts of the government firefighters who are in their fire stations most of the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Investigate cases of fire incidents- APC senator, Alli tells NEMA, others<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Chairman, Senate Committee maintained on Electoral Matters, Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli has advised the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA and other relevant agencies to investigate the incidences of fire incidents in Oyo state.<\/p>\n<p>Alli made this declaration in a statement made available to DAILY POST.<\/p>\n<p>Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District in his reaction, urged the relevant agencies to investigate the cause of fire incidents in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, commiserated with the traders at the affected areas.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker emphasised the need for prompt action and support from relevant authorities to assist the affected traders in recovering from the tragic event.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the government and individuals to assist the traders financially, rehabilitate their affected shops, and provide necessary resources to help them rebuild their businesses.<\/p>\n<p><b>Everyone should be trained on how to handle fire extinguishers- GM, Oyo Fire Service<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyinka Akinyemiju has advised that everyone should be trained on how to handle fire extinguishers.<\/p>\n<p>He made this declaration during a conversation with DAILY POST.<\/p>\n<p>Akinyemiju said that the agency has saved no fewer than 78 lives within this year.<\/p>\n<p>He said that eight people (8) have lost their lives within the period under review.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cWe attended the following emergency calls. January: 4. February: 25. We saved 78 lives in January; 6 people lost their lives. In February, two people lost their lives. That is the figures as of today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must ensure the following are done, in order to reduce fire outbreaks. It is not enough to switch off all electrical appliances. Endeavour to unplug them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not keep gas cylinders in the kitchen or within the building. Position them outside in the open air. Do not overload electrical sockets. Desist from indiscriminate bush and refuse burning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not refuel running engines. Do not use cellphones in the kitchen, gas plants and filling stations. Do not carelessly discard cigarettes. Use ashtrays instead.
