{"id":112251,"date":"2024-03-04T20:51:13","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/man-arraigned-for-allegedly-killing-brothers-wife-with-axe-in-ebonyi"},"modified":"2024-03-04T23:12:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T22:12:54","slug":"man-arraigned-for-allegedly-killing-brothers-wife-with-axe-in-ebonyi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/man-arraigned-for-allegedly-killing-brothers-wife-with-axe-in-ebonyi","title":{"rendered":"Man arraigned for allegedly killing brother\u2019s wife with axe in Ebonyi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ebonyi State Police have arraigned a 61-year-old man, Moses Nweze, for allegedly killing his elder brother\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Mary Nwomege, identified as his brother\u2019s wife, was reportedly killed by Nweze on February 24, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Following his arrest, Nweze was brought before an Abakaliki Magistrate Court on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>During the arraignment, Eze Chinagorom, counsel to the police, informed the court that Nweze had used an axe to strike Mrs. Nwomege on the head from behind while she was cooking.<\/p>\n<p>The charge against Nweze, as stated in court records, reads: \u201cThat you, Moses Nweze \u2018m\u2019, on February 24, 2024, at Edukwu Ndegazu in Ikwo Local Government Area within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court, unlawfully caused the death of one Mary Nwomege \u201cf\u201d by hitting her with an iron axe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police added that Nweze had committed an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.<\/p>\n<p>After the charges were read, the Presiding Magistrate, Lilian Ogodo, stated that the court lacked jurisdiction to handle the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, she remanded Nweze in custody at the Abakaliki Correctional Service and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for further action.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to our reporter, the victim\u2019s daughter, Chinasa Nwomege, recounted the harrowing incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was inside the house when suddenly I heard my mother\u2019s distressed breathing. I rushed out to find my uncle, Moses, striking my mother on the head with an axe.
