Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Organized labour in Ebonyi State on Monday picketed the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) offices in Abakaliki, capital of the state.<\/p>\n

The workers joined their counterparts across the country to protest the hike in electricity tariffs.<\/p>\n

They were led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in the state, Ogugua Egwu and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Chidi Igboji.<\/p>\n

They visited the NERC office at Nsugbe Street, the EEDC offices at Awolowo Street, and Town Planning Road, beside Abakaliki Correctional Centre.<\/p>\n

Bearing placards, the workers chanted songs to express their displeasure at the hike in electricity tariffs.<\/p>\n

Some of the placards read: \u2018NLC say no to electricity tariff increase\u2019, \u2018NLC demands reversal of electricity tariff hike\u2019, Nigerian government let the poor breathe, and \u2018Nigerians reject electricity tariff hike\u2019.<\/p>\n

NLC Chairman, Mr O\u0323gu\u0323gu\u0323a Egwu, described the increase as a reckless and wicked policy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to tell the world that their heartlessness, recklessness and wickedness against ordinary Nigerians must be stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to say that the recent tariff increase for Band A from 65 naira to over N225 representing a 340 percent increase, must be reversed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is not reversed by the government that has decided to suffer us, we must continue to picket all EEDC and NERC offices till the hike is reversed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

TUC Chairman, Chidi Igboji said the increase will lead to continued impoverishment of the poor masses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis increase is evil because it is meant to ensure that the poor masses will continue to be poor and we the organised labour in Ebonyi State, are saying no to this increase. What we are saying is that EEDC and NERC should let the poor breathe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
