Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A 30-year-old teacher, Faith Nwonye, of Landmark School, Mgbakwu, in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old pupil to coma.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh told journalists in her office on Monday that the school had been permanently shut down by the state government.<\/p>\n

Chuma-Udeh disclosed further that she had summoned the school\u2019s proprietor and Nwonye to explain the incident that led to the brutalisation of the primary two pupil.<\/p>\n

The commissioner explained that the school was not only closed based on the incident but as a result of its illegality.<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cWe received this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu that a child was beaten to a coma over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve handed the matter to the police for further investigations, as we await Mr Governor\u2019s directives.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeanwhile, the school is closed down indefinitely because it\u2019s not supposed to exist in the first instance.\u201d<\/p>\n

She expressed sadness over the development while lamenting that the chances of the survival of the victim, who is currently in admission in a hospital, is 20 per cent, according to the medical doctor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether the school is legal or not, it\u2019s criminal to beat a child. According to the doctor, the chances of survival of the child is 20%,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

She noted that the teacher would be brought to book.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as the Police are done, the teacher will face other institutions against child rights. She\u2019s going to have the full wrath of the law brought upon her over her actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnambra State abhors violence to children, women, and any other person. It\u2019s not part of this administration and Mr Governor is against such.\u201d<\/p>\n
