Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Ogun State residents have been urged to prioritize their health by shunning the dumping of waste in rivers and drainages, which leads to cholera and other diseases.<\/p>\n

The state Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, made the appeal on Wednesday while speaking at the 2024 World Environmental Day celebration held in Kuto, Abeokuta.<\/p>\n

Coker emphasised the connection between the environment and health, noting that improper disposal of garbage impacts people\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t talk about the environment without talking about our health. Health is impacted by the environment, and when waste is not disposed of carefully, it affects human health.<\/p>\n

\u201cMinding the environment is the responsibility of all. If we don\u2019t dispose of our waste properly, it means that the water becomes contaminated, and when that happens, we have diarrheal diseases.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen waste is dumped in places like rivers, it causes blockages. When there is flooding and people become displaced from their homes, diseases like cholera spread.\u201d<\/p>\n

She appealed to the public to also avoid open defecation, stating that it contributes to diarrhea.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefecating in the rivers is wrong. Open defecation as well. When you go to the open and do your thing, the rain comes and washes it into our wells and rivers, causing diarrheal diseases,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
