{"id":122228,"date":"2024-06-25T23:22:09","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T22:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/alleged-n4bn-fraud-efcc-opens-case-against-ex-gov-obiano-invites-2-witnesses"},"modified":"2024-06-26T00:33:06","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T23:33:06","slug":"alleged-n4bn-fraud-efcc-opens-case-against-ex-gov-obiano-invites-2-witnesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/alleged-n4bn-fraud-efcc-opens-case-against-ex-gov-obiano-invites-2-witnesses","title":{"rendered":"Alleged N4bn fraud: EFCC opens case against ex-Gov Obiano, invites 2 witnesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Two witnesses testified when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opened its money laundering case against former Governor of Anambra, Willie Obiano, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC arraigned the ex-governor on a nine-count charge of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The commission alleged that Obiano misappropriated over N4 billion from the state\u2019s treasury during his time in office from March 2014 to March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>A bank staff, Mr. Tochukwu Aloysius Nnadi, and an Onitsha-based businesswoman, Mrs. Chinwe Patricia Egbunam, were led in evidence by EFCC\u2019s lawyer, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), at the proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>Nnadi told the court that he was a bank manager at Awka, the Anambra State capital.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cMy lord, as part of our responsibilities, we manage customers\u2019 accounts and interface with various security and anti-graft agencies in terms of inquiry on a customer\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually comply by providing the requested information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the defendant in this matter. He is the immediate past governor of Anambra State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn April 2022, I was informed by our compliance unit that I was needed at EFCC in respect of activities of the past administration of Anambra State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went there with two of my colleagues.
