Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Centre for the Promotion of Sharia has expressed concern over attempt by Sokoto State Government towards toying with the Sultanate Council.<\/p>\n

It said the Sultan represents a belief system and heritage established by Sheikh Uthman Danfodio, which must be protected and promoted.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST recalls that the state House of Assembly had passed a bill striping the Sultan of Sokoto of powers to appoint district heads without the authorisation of the state governor.<\/p>\n

MURIC Director, Professor Akintola, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Senator Shehu Sani had expressed similar views.<\/p>\n

However, while expressing their view in a statement on Saturday by its Chairman, Aliyu Ibrahim Altukri, the group said \u201cwe are stakeholders in the Sultanate institution and we object to toying with it by any political office holder\u201d, adding that the sultan is not an institution exclusive to Sokoto State government, but a revered position in which all Nigerian Muslims have a stake.<\/p>\n

The statement commended the Sokoto State Government for \u201cclarifying that it has no intention to toe the line that is being speculated and affirming that it holds the Sultanate in a very high regard and esteem.\u201d<\/p>\n

It warned groups which called for the arrest of MURIC director to desist from misleading leaders from toeing the wrong path, reminding them that the work of civil society organisations is to protect the populace from exploitative tendencies.<\/p>\n
