Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A casual worker in one of the manufacturing companies in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has been confirmed dead.<\/p>\n

The casual worker whose identify has not been revealed died when the staff of the company protested over the non-increment of their salaries.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred on Monday.<\/p>\n

Our correspondent learnt that the casual workers staged a protest over the company\u2019s refusal to provide them with palliatives, and failure to increase wages.<\/p>\n

The casual staff claimed that the Federal Government had last year directed the organized private sector to give their workers palliatives but the company failed to heed the directive.<\/p>\n

The development prompted the employees to take to the streets in anger.<\/p>\n

The management of the company invited security agents to stop the protest, a move which was resisted by the angry workers.<\/p>\n

However, in the process, a staff of the company was reportedly shot.<\/p>\n

The worker, according to sources, died, while several others sustained various degrees of injuries.<\/p>\n

Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

He said that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n

He added that the Commissioner of Police had ordered that the case be taken up by the Homicide Department of the Criminal Investigation Department with the Deputy Commissioner of Police directly in charge of investigations.<\/p>\n

Osifeso, in a statement made available , said, \u201cPreliminary investigation reveals that the protest was premised on a widespread false information authored and peddled by some of the workers concerning the disbursement of Palliative to all Private owned companies and firms in the Country.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir grouse however was that they were being denied the welfare package. Sadly, the protest was hijacked by Criminal elements who forced their way into the factory destroying vehicles and property worth millions of naira.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne death was recorded during the violent protest. However, Normalcy has since returned to the affected area with the immediate deployment of Command\u2019s operational and tactical assets to prevent any possible future reoccurrence.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, (12) Twelve Suspects have been arrested in connection with the violent protest. Furthermore, the CP has ordered that the entire case be taken up by the Homicide Department of the Criminal Investigation Department with the Deputy Commissioner of Police directly in charge of investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n
