{"id":125247,"date":"2024-07-22T18:54:25","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T17:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/fake-kidnap-court-reduces-dethroned-magodo-baales-jail-term"},"modified":"2024-07-22T20:09:17","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T19:09:17","slug":"fake-kidnap-court-reduces-dethroned-magodo-baales-jail-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/fake-kidnap-court-reduces-dethroned-magodo-baales-jail-term","title":{"rendered":"Fake Kidnap: Court reduces dethroned Magodo Baale\u2019s jail term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has affirmed the conviction of the dethroned Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, Mutiu Ogundare for faking his own abduction.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos State High in Ikeja had on September 27, 2022, sentenced the dethroned Baale to 15 years imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Ogundare, not pleased with the judgement, approached the appellate court to challenge the decision of the lower court.<\/p>\n<p>A three-man panel of the appellate court in a unanimous judgment upheld the ruling of the lower court in counts one and two and overturned count three.<\/p>\n<p>The lead judge, Justice Peter Bassi said that Ogundare\u2019s appeal succeeded in part and reduced his sentence to 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>The court held,\u201d The Appellant is to serve 10 years imprisonment, for count one and two years for counts two, respectively.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the third count, the court overturned the sentence in respect of false representation to release a kidnapped person.<\/p>\n<p>Other Justices of the panel, Justice Bayero and Folashade Ojo, concurred with the lead judgement.<\/p>\n<p>Ogundare was prosecuted alongside his wife, Abolanle and brother, Opeyemi Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>They were arraigned on three counts bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and fake kidnapping, preferred against them by the Lagos State government.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Oshodi, on June 15, 2022, convicted Ogundare and his brother Opeyemi Mohammed on three counts bordering on conspiracy and fake abduction.<\/p>\n<p>The court, however, discharged and acquitted Ogundare\u2019s wife, Abolanle saying that she had no link to the offences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
