{"id":125699,"date":"2024-07-25T22:28:18","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/supreme-court-ruling-benue-reschedules-lg-polls"},"modified":"2024-07-25T23:34:21","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T22:34:21","slug":"supreme-court-ruling-benue-reschedules-lg-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/supreme-court-ruling-benue-reschedules-lg-polls","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court ruling: Benue reschedules LG polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) has rescheduled the Local Government elections to October 5, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The election was initially slated for November 16, 2024, after an earlier date of July 6, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The new date was announced on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. John Chen, during a meeting with members of the Benue State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Electoral Matters and Civil Society, led by its Chairman, Mr. Abu Umoru, at the Commission\u2019s Headquarters in Makurdi.<\/p>\n<p>Chen, represented by the Commission\u2019s Secretary, Dr. Vincent Gisaor, explained that the change was necessitated by a recent Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n<p>He stated, \u201cThe Commission is already partnering with relevant stakeholders to ensure the conduct of free, fair, and credible Local Government elections in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen also pointed out some challenges faced by the Commission, including a lack of funds and operational vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Chairman of the Standing Committee, Mr. Umoru, urged the Commission to organize the Local Government elections promptly, in light of the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling that declared Caretaker Committees at that tier of government illegitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Umoru stated the importance of meeting the deadline set by the apex court for elected Councils to be in place, warning that failure to do so would adversely affect Local Government administration in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman also called for the unfreezing of the Commission\u2019s accounts to enable the management to access funds necessary for immediate arrangements for the poll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
