{"id":128229,"date":"2024-08-18T10:29:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T09:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/ecowas-deploying-diplomatic-mechanisms-to-mitigate-mali-b-faso-niger-exit-kalu"},"modified":"2024-08-18T11:32:10","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T10:32:10","slug":"ecowas-deploying-diplomatic-mechanisms-to-mitigate-mali-b-faso-niger-exit-kalu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/ecowas-deploying-diplomatic-mechanisms-to-mitigate-mali-b-faso-niger-exit-kalu","title":{"rendered":"ECOWAS deploying diplomatic mechanisms to mitigate Mali, B\/Faso, Niger exit \u2014 Kalu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria\u2019s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, says the ECOWAS Parliament is deploying parliamentary diplomacy mechanisms to mitigate Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger\u2019s threats to exit the sub-regional bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Kalu stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on the sidelines of the committee\u2019s delocalised meeting in the Ivorian capital city.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was no cause for alarm over the bloc\u2019s perceived existential threat posed by violent extremism, and the exit threats from ECOWAS by the three West African countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are already mechanisms in place, through parliamentary diplomacy, to reach out to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters have been sent to them, and very soon, some of us will start visiting those countries to engage the heads of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll open up the doors for them to come back to the family; We need them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll tell them for instance that, granted, maybe they were offended by one or two things, but let us sit down again and discuss,\u201d the deputy speaker stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cYou can\u2019t just forget them and say it doesn\u2019t matter; that they can go on their own. No! We have to reach out to them and say we are better off as one family.
