{"id":128982,"date":"2024-08-26T09:11:27","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T08:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/admissions-waec-neco-will-no-longer-allow-underage-children-nigerian-govt"},"modified":"2024-08-26T10:17:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T09:17:14","slug":"admissions-waec-neco-will-no-longer-allow-underage-children-nigerian-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/admissions-waec-neco-will-no-longer-allow-underage-children-nigerian-govt","title":{"rendered":"Admissions: WAEC, NECO will no longer allow underage children \u2013 Nigerian Govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Federal Government has insisted that candidates must be 18 years old before they are admitted into tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Education Minister Tahir Mamman made this known when he appeared on Channels Television\u2019s Sunday Politics.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Federal Government has also instructed the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, and the National Examinations Council, NECO, not to allow underage children to write their examinations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister, no candidate will sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) unless they are 18 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is 18 (years). What we did at the meeting that we had with JAMB (in July) was to allow this year and for it to serve as a kind of notice for parents that this year, JAMB will admit students who are below that age but from next year, JAMB is going to insist that anybody applying to go to university in Nigeria meets the required age, which is 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, this is not a new policy; this is a policy that has been there for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven basically, if you compute the number of years pupils, and learners are supposed to be in school, the number you will end up with is 17 and a half \u2013 from early child care to primary school to junior secondary school and then senior secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will end up with 17 and a half by the time they are ready for admission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any case, NECO and WAEC, henceforth will not be allowing underage children to write their examinations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, if somebody has not spent the requisite number of years in that particular level of study, WAEC and NECO will not allow them to write the examination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
