{"id":129810,"date":"2024-09-03T19:56:06","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T18:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/man-arraigned-for-allegedly-defaming-police-officers-character-online"},"modified":"2024-09-03T21:03:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T20:03:37","slug":"man-arraigned-for-allegedly-defaming-police-officers-character-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/man-arraigned-for-allegedly-defaming-police-officers-character-online","title":{"rendered":"Man arraigned for allegedly defaming Police officer\u2019s character online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned a 39-year-old man, Ganiyu Abiola, over alleged defamation of the character of a police officer through Facebook and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>Abiola, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of defamation and breach of peace before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor, Insp Sikiru Opaleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 12 at 6.00 p.m. at the Egbeda area of Ibadan.<\/p>\n<p>Opaleye said that the defendant, through his Facebook and WhatsApp accounts, alleged that Insp Folasade Adeoye aided someone to commit fraud.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the defendant knew that the information was false.<\/p>\n<p>Opaleye said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by spreading false information about Adeoye.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor said that the alleged offences contravened Section 249 (d) and 375 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Section 249 (d) of the law provides for one-year jail term for defamation of character, while Section 375 provides for a month in prison for breach of peace.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.<\/p>\n<p>Ogunkanmi directed that one of the sureties must belong to a human rights association.<\/p>\n<p>She ordered that the other surety must provide evidence of three years\u2019 tax payment.<\/p>\n<p>She adjourned the case until November 19 for mention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
