{"id":131229,"date":"2024-09-17T20:28:35","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T19:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/abure-no-longer-labour-party-chairman-inec"},"modified":"2024-09-17T21:42:09","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T20:42:09","slug":"abure-no-longer-labour-party-chairman-inec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/parties\/abure-no-longer-labour-party-chairman-inec","title":{"rendered":"Abure no longer Labour Party chairman \u2013 INEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it is illegal and unconstitutional for Julius Abure to continue parading himself as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP.<\/p>\n<p>The electoral body said it no longer recognises Abure or other members of the party\u2019s national working committee, as their tenures expired in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This is contained in a counter-affidavit, INEC filed in response to a suit brought by the Labour Party challenging its exclusion from the commission\u2019s refresher training for uploading party agents ahead of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission argued that the Labour Party\u2019s leadership, including Abure, is now invalid, stressing that it does not recognise the party\u2019s March 2024 National Convention, which purportedly re-elected Abure as chairman.<\/p>\n<p>It maintained that the convention contravened both the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act, stressing that it only deals with parties that have legitimate leadership in place.<\/p>\n<p>According to a written submission supporting the counter affidavit, INEC\u2019s legal team, led by Tanko Inuwa, SAN, stated that the Labour Party\u2019s suit seeks declaratory reliefs, which cannot be granted merely by admission.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the Labour Party must prove its case, even with the admissions presented.<\/p>\n<p>The INEC\u2019s lawyers added that, due to the Labour Party\u2019s failure to adhere to the legal requirements in holding its national convention, the party no longer has a valid leadership with which INEC can engage.<\/p>\n<p>They prayed the court to dismiss the suit, arguing that the Labour Party is not entitled to the reliefs it is seeking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
