{"id":132274,"date":"2024-09-27T10:33:34","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T09:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/were-not-igbo-ikwerre-ethnic-group-insists"},"modified":"2024-09-27T11:37:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T10:37:25","slug":"were-not-igbo-ikwerre-ethnic-group-insists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/were-not-igbo-ikwerre-ethnic-group-insists","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019re not Igbo \u2013 Ikwerre ethnic group insists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State, represented by the Iwhnurohna Progressive Union (IPO), has rejected the assertion from Ohanaeze Ndigbo that they are part of the Igbo ethnic group.<\/p>\n<p>IPO instead said that they are facing harassment as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Trust reports that the President of IPO, Dr Okachikwu Dibia made this known during a media briefing in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Dibia appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene and address threats made by prominent Ohanaeze Ndigbo members against the Ikwerre people if they continued to reject the Igbo label.<\/p>\n<p>He went further to outline eleven reasons- encompassing linguistic, historical and cultural differences, why Ikwerre should not be classified as Igbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Ikwerre is our political name, Iwhnurohna is our native name. Both refer to the same people: the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, found in Rivers State, Niger Delta, South South geopolitical region of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they say \u2018Ikwerre is Igbo,\u2019 they imply that all ancestral communities in Ikwerre originated from Igboland.
