Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Worried by the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the Edo State Government has embarked on a comprehensive sensitisation campaign to combat the trends.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST reports that the state government noted that drug-related issues accounted for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation in the state.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Secretary of Social Development and Gender, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, flagged off the programme in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.<\/p>\n

Osobajo, represented by Mr Sylvester Okeguale, the Director of the Rehabilitation Department, said the initiative would be replicated in Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts, respectively, later in the month.<\/p>\n

She said the programme tagged \u201cCatch Them Young\u201d was aimed at educating schoolchildren and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness.<\/p>\n

She said in response to the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the ministry has initiated a programme to combat substance abuse.<\/p>\n

According to her: \u201cOur children are the future, but the future is now under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe message emphasised the urgency and collective responsibility required to address the issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, who commended the state government\u2019s efforts, emphasised the critical need for community engagement.<\/p>\n

Marvelous, however, noted that addressing drug abuse requires a multifaceted approach, involving parents, educational institutions, and community organisations.<\/p>\n

While emphasising the crucial role parents play in preventing substance abuse, he encouraged them to stay actively involved in their children\u2019s lives to mitigate the influence of peer pressure.<\/p>\n

The local government council boss called for a united front to ensure that youth receive the necessary guidance and support.<\/p>\n

On his part, Mr. Purpose Ehigie, the facilitator, who delivered a comprehensive presentation, shed more light on the alarming dangers of substance abuse.<\/p>\n

Ehigie, who called for vigilance, highlighted the risks associated with prescription medications, alcohol, and other seemingly harmless substances.<\/p>\n

He noted that curbing substance abuse among youths demanded proactive measures.<\/p>\n

Ehigie, however, advocated that early education and intervention are key to empowering children and adolescents to develop healthy habits and coping mechanisms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis approach aims to \u201ccatch them young\u201d and foster a safer, healthier future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
