Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has arrested the demonstrators of the EndSARS memorial.<\/p>\n

The protesters were arrested at Lekki Tollgate, in Lagos State on Sunday, October 20, 2024, and locked up in a black maria.<\/p>\n

In a viral video on social media, some of the arrested demonstrators said the peaceful march was disrupted when police began to shoot and release tear gas to break up the crowd.<\/p>\n

As of the time of filing this report, the police have not issued an official statement about the incident.<\/p>\n

The gathering is to mark the 4th anniversary of the October 20 EndSARS memorial.<\/p>\n

Nigerian youths had in 2020 staged a nationwide protest with the hashtag #EndSARS against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, an allegedly notorious unit of the Nigeria Police with a long record of abuse on citizens.<\/p>\n

On October 20 2020, the Nigerian military used live ammunition on the peaceful protesters who converged at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, leading to the massacre of unarmed youths.<\/p>\n

Following the tragic incident, Tollgate has become a symbolic site for EndSARS protests.<\/p>\n
