{"id":136595,"date":"2024-11-02T21:19:16","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T20:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/prosecution-of-minors-welfare-of-nigerians-not-your-priority-northern-coalition-to-tinubu"},"modified":"2024-11-02T22:33:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-02T21:33:00","slug":"prosecution-of-minors-welfare-of-nigerians-not-your-priority-northern-coalition-to-tinubu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/prosecution-of-minors-welfare-of-nigerians-not-your-priority-northern-coalition-to-tinubu","title":{"rendered":"Prosecution of Minors: Welfare of Nigerians not your priority \u2013 Northern Coalition to Tinubu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has reacted to the arraignment of a number of minors by the Nigerian Police.<\/p>\n<p>The minors, according to an earlier report were detained for over 90 days before their arraignment in an Abuja High Court on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Their offence, according to the Nigeria Police, was their participation in a protest against hunger and bad governance.<\/p>\n<p>It was learnt that at least four of the children collapsed in the courtroom during the arraignment as a result of hunger and absence of medical care while in custody.<\/p>\n<p>CNG says that unfortunately, the detention and arraignment of the frail, malnourished and hapless children have exposed the government as a desperate entity that is determined to de-market and embarrass Nigeria before the international community.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement signed by Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, its National Coordinator, the CNG says the continued detention and mistreatment of the minors was a gross violation of their basic rights.<\/p>\n<p>CNG says it strongly condemns the abuse of power and the blatant disregard for the welfare and dignity of young citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe treatment these children are receiving highlights a troubling failure of state actors to prioritize the welfare and rights of its most vulnerable citizens, children, especially when their \u201ccrime\u2019 was to demand better governance and accountability,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disheartening that in a country with a history of resilience and promise, minors are being made to endure starvation and harsh conditions while awaiting trial for daring to speak up for their future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not only a violation of domestic law but also contravenes international human rights principles protecting children from harm and unlawful detention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdeally, those children are supposed to be treated first as victims of state abuse and deprivation whose leaders have failed to provide the necessary leadership that can mould them into better members of society as they are a direct outcome of our decayed system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is shamefully despicable that criminals and bandits that are holding the entire country to ransom do not face such stringent consequences for their actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidently, the Government has consistently proven that people\u2019s problems and deteriorating situations are not part of its priority because of its disregard for the daily hardships of its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasingly, frequent blackouts have become a norm across the country, severely impacting homes, businesses, and essential services which became worse with the recent blackout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe elimination of fuel subsidies and constant raising of fuel prices have pushed the cost of living to record highs, making basic necessities even harder to afford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of prioritizing the welfare of the populace by providing feasible alternatives or relief, the government\u2019s priorities appear to be detaining, abusing and crushing the vulnerable children that need support and protection to grow into responsible adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, hunger and starvation have become weapons against defenseless and malnourished teenagers. It is clear that the government\u2019s neglect of essential services and its catastrophic economic policies have strangulated millions in a state of uncertainty, desperation, and disillusionment to which these minors belong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese children must not be targeted as the scapegoat for expressing their frustrations as Nigerians have never gone through such dehumanizing and cruel policies that this administration promotes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CNG called for the immediate and unconditional release of all minors detained for participating in the protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand that the government prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement over intimidation, especially with young citizens who represent the future of this nation,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
