QPR kicked off their new Sky Bet Championship season with a win with Jordan Hugill\u2019s eight minute opener and Nigeria\u2019s Ebere Eze\u2019s second half finish helping the R\u2019s to a 2-1 victory over promotion hopefuls Stoke City. Stoke\u2019s Sam Clucas\u2019 78th-minute reply only proved to be a consolation strike and no more.<\/p>\n
Speaking shortly after the full-time whistle in Staffordshire, Warburton told www.qpr.co.uk: \u201cI\u2019m delighted \u2013 delighted for the players and all of the supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe players have worked so hard in pre-season. We\u2019ve brought in 14 new players and they\u2019ve adapted so well, worked so hard and taken on board some good ideas.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll credit to the players today, Stoke is a tough place to come to and to get three points \u2013 that\u2019s a tremendous start of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cWe knew that Stoke were going to press us, so we had to play a little less football than we\u2019d like to.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got players who can take care of the football, but today we had to deal with a very tough opponent \u2013 they\u2019ve got Premier League players in their squad who are very talented.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we had to be mindful of that, respect it and do what we had to do. I was delighted with the victory and thought we did really well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clucas\u2019 late goal for Stoke ensured a nerve-jangling ending.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were 2-0 up and looked comfortable,\u201d Warburton continued. \u201cWe were in control and should have added a third goal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen we gave away a goal. Stoke have a real physical threat and had some quality subs to bring on.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe dynamic of the last 10 or so minutes changed and we had to deal with that \u2013 but we stood up and defended our goal with real passion. All credit to the players, now we can enjoy the journey home.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
