{"id":139304,"date":"2024-11-19T22:58:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T21:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/cbn-uncovers-fake-swift-messages-fraud-warns-nigerians"},"modified":"2024-11-20T00:02:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T23:02:49","slug":"cbn-uncovers-fake-swift-messages-fraud-warns-nigerians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/cbn-uncovers-fake-swift-messages-fraud-warns-nigerians","title":{"rendered":"CBN uncovers fake SWIFT messages fraud, warns Nigerians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has uncovered a fresh fake SWIFT message scheme and warned Nigerians and the general public against falling victim to fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson of the apex bank, Hakama Sidi Ali, issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>She clarified that CBN does not provide correspondent banking services for Nigerian banks in foreign payments nor maintain accounts for private business entities.<\/p>\n<p>The apex bank stressed that the claim that alleged expected foreign inflows for onward credit into the accounts of private business entities are trapped in the CBN is not only spurious but deceitful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been inundated with claims by private entities, individuals, law firms, and government agencies that foreign currency funds allegedly transferred to them by foreign entities have yet to be credited to their accounts with Nigerian banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some instances, the claimants alleged that the funds were withheld by either the beneficiary bank in Nigeria or the CBN and requested the assistance of the bank towards releasing the funds to them. The requests are usually supported with fake documents such as SWIFT MT103, SWIFT Ack copy, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has become imperative to state that the SWIFT ACK copy and SWIFT MT103 that these claimants usually attach as evidence of remittance to beneficiary banks in Nigeria are not reliable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SWIFT messages are always not traceable on the SWIFT platform, and the funds have not been received to enable their application to the beneficiary\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a situation where a fund transfer beneficiary\u2019s receiving bank claims non-receipt of funds remitted by the foreign entity (sending customer), instead of escalating such issue to CBN or Law<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnforcement Agencies: the standard practice is for the sending customer to contact the sending bank to send a tracer to trace where the fund is hanging and recall it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state emphatically that the CBN neither provides correspondent banking services for Nigerian banks in foreign payments nor maintains accounts for private business entities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, petitioners\u2019 claim that the alleged expected inflows for onward credit into the accounts of private business entities trapped in the CBN is not only spurious but deceitful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe general public is therefore advised to be careful with such unauthentic SWIFT messages and documents containing spurious claims of non-application of substantial foreign currency funds allegedly transferred into the beneficiary\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CBN will not hesitate to report any bank customer making unsubstantiated and illegitimate claims to law enforcement agencies for investigation and prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease be guided accordingly,\u201d CBN stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
