{"id":149223,"date":"2025-02-08T21:48:39","date_gmt":"2025-02-08T20:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/why-delta-govt-removed-beggars-children-from-asaba-streets"},"modified":"2025-02-15T22:20:22","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T21:20:22","slug":"why-delta-govt-removed-beggars-children-from-asaba-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/why-delta-govt-removed-beggars-children-from-asaba-streets","title":{"rendered":"Why Delta govt removed beggars, children from Asaba streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Delta State government has given reasons for evacuating over a dozen homeless children, including a 19-year-old mother and her three-month-old baby from the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry officials lamented that the state capital has been experiencing an influx of people from neighboring and far states, who besiege the streets to beg for alms, while some have been reported to be involved in criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Pat Ajudua, after a raid on strategic locations in Asaba and the environs, disclosed that the exercise was aimed at taking children off the streets, where they would be profiled before they are reunited with their parents or caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey constitute nuisance and as the days go by, they end up becoming criminals that will pose security risks to the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelta State does not encourage street hawking; we don\u2019t encourage little children, or even women sleeping under the bridge\u201d she disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>A fatherless twin Clinton and Henry, who were caught alongside other children loitering in the early hours of the day were apprehended.<\/p>\n<p>Decrying his arrest, Somto Ifekanma, stated he was a sachet water vendor, who had spent the night on the streets, because he could not secure an accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t see me in Summit (Junction) again.
