Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has warned parents and guardians against making unfounded allegations against universities over admission decisions, urging them to understand the ranking system used in the selection process.<\/p>\nDr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB\u2019s Public Communication Advisor, in a statement, refuted several recent allegations of admission denial, stressing that all decisions are based on merit and transparent ranking through the Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS.<\/p>\n
Benjamin cited the case of Mr. Godwin Nsan, who publicly accused the University of Calabar of unfairly denying his son admission.<\/p>\n
According to him, when JAMB investigated the case, it found that his son, who scored 201 in UTME with an aggregate of 34 percent, did not meet the institution\u2019s cut-off scores of 55 percent (Merit), 35 percent (Catchment), and 35 percent (Educationally Less Developed States \u2013 ELDS).<\/p>\n
He stated that a similar case involved a senior public figure, who claimed that Modibbo Adama University, Yola, had discriminated against certain candidates. JAMB\u2019s findings, however, proved the allegations were baseless.<\/p>\n
Benjamin explained further that in another incident, a parent publicly protested that his son, who scored 345, was wrongfully denied admission into the University of Jos.<\/p>\n
He said that JAMB reviewed the case and discovered that the candidate was ranked 86th, while the university could only admit 68 students on merit.<\/p>\n
The parent later apologized after reviewing the transparent admission ranking process at JAMB\u2019s headquarters.<\/p>\n
To prevent misinformation, JAMB encouraged parents to use its Ticketing Platform for inquiries before making public accusations.<\/p>\n
The examinations body also warned against the misuse of its \u2018Exceptionally Brilliant Window\u2019, which allows candidates under 16 years old to take UTME if they demonstrate outstanding performance.<\/p>\n
JAMB observed an abnormal surge in registrations through this window, cautioning parents against overestimating their children\u2019s abilities<\/p>\n
\u201cA further example of this misplaced belief in exceptionalism is the misuse of the \u201cexceptionally brilliant window\u201d introduced for the 2025 UTME.<\/p>\n
\u201cSurprisingly, a ridiculously high number of candidates have registered through this window, a phenomenon virtually unheard of globally, where only a small fraction typically qualifies.<\/p>\n
\u201cParents are advised not to exaggerate the brilliance of their children without realising that there are more brilliant candidates out there,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
Benjamin reaffirmed JAMB\u2019s commitment to fairness and transparency, revealing that a senior university official is currently facing prosecution for admission-related fraud, while four others are under investigation.<\/p>\n
The Board urged parents to understand that UTME is a ranking exam and that admission is competitive, depending on the overall performance of all candidates and available slots.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe urge parents to refrain from jumping to conclusions without considering the broader competition. JAMB will continue to ensure fairness and investigate all genuine complaints,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n
