{"id":149559,"date":"2025-02-10T11:04:25","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T10:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/protest-erupts-in-rivers-as-police-officer-shoots-man-dead"},"modified":"2025-02-15T22:54:55","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T21:54:55","slug":"protest-erupts-in-rivers-as-police-officer-shoots-man-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/protest-erupts-in-rivers-as-police-officer-shoots-man-dead","title":{"rendered":"Protest erupts in Rivers as police officer shoots man dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>There was pandemonium in the Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State after the alleged extra-judicial killing of a youth by a police officer.<\/p>\n<p>The incident was said to have occurred when the policeman attached to the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command, shot and killed Chikuma Egbule, a native of the community.<\/p>\n<p>The incident triggered instant protests in the community which is also a host community for the Port Harcourt International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters initially carried the body of the slain youth to the Omagwa Divisional Police station where they intended to deposit it.<\/p>\n<p>They were, however, resisted and repelled by the policemen on duty.<\/p>\n<p>They then blocked the road in protest, causing gridlock on the busy highway which leads to the airport, and Owerri in Imo State.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, when contacted, said that the trigger-happy cop had been arrested while the body of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe command is aware, and the CP is on top of the situation.
