Nigeria. On Monday, February 3, 2025, Justice Basirat Adebowale, of the Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta, sentenced Adekanbi Lekan, Odetola Ahmed and Adeniyi Waheed, to death by hanging for killing a couple, Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye and their only surviving son, Oreoluwa.

Justice Adebowale sentenced the trio after delivering a judgement which lasted for more than three hours.

The Judge convicted and sentenced first, second and third defendants of counts one to nine, handing them death by hanging or lethal injection, life imprisonment with hard labour, 14 years imprisonment, among others.

“The sentence of this court on Adekambi Lekan in respect of count II is that he be hanged by neck until you’re dead or by lethal injection.

“May God have mercy on your soul,” the court held.

How at all began

The couple who lived at Oba Karunwi Road, a street right behind former Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s residence, in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, had just returned from the 2022/2023 crossover service held at the Christ Anglican Church Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Unknown to them, they were trailed by their driver, Lekan and his gang who robbed, gruesomely murdered and set their house ablaze at about 1:30 am.

The trio also tied their 26-year-old son, Oreoluwa and adopted son, Felix, with ropes and threw them into a river along Adigbe-Obada road, where Oreoluwa died.

Two years after the incident, the late Fatinoyes finally got justice.

The assailants were on Monday arraigned alongside Fadairo Temitope (wife of the first defendant); Adekanbi Adenike, the mother; Owolaja Aanuoluwapo; Usman Azeez, Abass Odetola and Adewusi Lukman.

They were arraigned on a 24-count charge, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, conspiracy to murder, murder, arson, escape from lawful custody, perverting the course of justice, receiving stolen property, among others.

Lekan’s wife was also convicted and sentenced for four years for count 12 and 14, which will run concurrently, while the mother was found guilty of count 15 with a one year imprisonment from the day of remand.

We feel relieved now – Brother to late Fatinoye

The younger brother to the late Kehinde Fatinoye, Mr Zacceaus Fatinoye, has expressed relief following the court judgment.

While arguing that his brother cannot be brought back to life by the assailants’ death sentence, Zacceaus emphasised that the family as a whole had found relief that justice was served.

“We feel okay but if they kill them or not we cannot see my elder brother again.

“But since judgement has been delivered, we feel at rest than before,” Zacceaus said.

Recall that after the tragedy, the family members, church members, and even the general public were thrown into shock and had long prayed for justice to be served.

Speaking to newsmen, Olufemi Oladipo, a member of the church, described the late Fatinoye as one committed to the church and expressed gratitude to God following the judgment.

He said, “The late Fatinoye happens to be my church member at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo Ake, he was very committed to the church.

“Well we want to thank Almighty God for the smooth judgment delivered today and we can all see that the three of them were convicted by hanging, so we are grateful for this great judgment.”

We might appeal – Lawyer

Meanwhile, the legal adviser representing the first, second, third and fifth defendants, Babatunde Busari, has said he would consult his client to know the next line of action.

Busari stated this while speaking briefly to newsmen shortly after the judgement was delivered.

He said, “Well the court has delivered its judgement, in respect to the first, second and third, we would consult with our client and would know the next step to take.”

When asked if they are appealing the judgement, he said, “It depends on the advice of our client but of course I stand to reason that our client would most likely want to explore that option, but we would consult with them.

“As to the fifth defendant, the sentence is to run from the date of her detention so the resultant effect of that is that she’s going home today.

“But for the first, second and third we would consult with them and know what the next step is,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Kayode Akinsola, lawyer to Abass Odetola, the 8th defendant who was freed, described the judgment as lucid, adding that no sinner should go unpunished.

DAILY POST gathered that Abass, the younger brother to Ahmed Odetola, one of the trio who committed the murder, assisted the police in arresting his brother.

However, Akinsola noted that the police, despite his advice, charged his client to court.

Akinsola said, “Yes the client I’m actually defending here is one of the defendants who assisted the police in arresting the culprit.

“You know it is always good to stand on the side of justice, but when the police were doing their investigation, they granted him bail and I told the police on the need for them not to allow someone that assisted them to be charged to court, but they still went ahead to charge him.”

Meanwhile, Akinsola maintained that the judgement should serve as a warning to criminals who commit crimes and believe they can avoid the consequences of their actions.

“Judgement has been served, no sinner should go unpunished. And I want to believe that this should be a lesson to others who are outside there thinking that they can still kill and nothing will happen, this is Nigeria,” he stated.

We won’t hesitate to sign death warrants of condemned criminals – Ogun AG

Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), has said the state government is considering signing the Death Warrants of condemned criminals sentenced by competent courts.

DAILY POST reported that Ogungbade stated this after inspecting inmates and facilities at the Correctional Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta.

The Attorney General asserted that signing the death warrant would serve as a deterrent to those who may want to commit heinous crimes in the state.

While lamenting the increase in activities like ritual killings, kidnapping, cultism, among others, he said the state government was ready to take the bull by the horns by implementing the law through signing the Death Warrants.

Ogungbade said, “I can tell you that we are looking seriously at a means of sending a message that Ogun State is not a place where you can come and commit such serious crimes and get away with it.

“The law as of today, for example, states that a murder case attracts the death penalty and some other offenses.

“But if you look at it nationally, for a long time, there has been reluctance on the part of governments across the states, particularly since the advent of democratic rule, to sign Death Warrants.

“But I assure you that at this time, we are looking very seriously at following the law to its letter.”

Source: Daily Post Nigeria

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

By Gift Oba Africa-Press – Nigeria.
