Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Ogun State command, says no fewer than 675 suspects were arrested and 221 convicted for drug trafficking and abuse during the year 2024.<\/p>\n

Along with the arrest, the command disclosed that 537.81 litres of liquid-based substances of abuse and 9.7 tonnes of various hard drugs were seized.<\/p>\n

The State Commander, Tijjani Rabe, stated this in an interview on Tuesday, at the commands headquartres, Abeokuta, the Ogun State state capital.<\/p>\n

While lamenting the rise in drug abuse and illicit trafficking, Rabe revealed that the state experienced a high drug influx and consumption rate during the ember months as people and merchants returned home to celebrate Christmas and the start of the New Year.<\/p>\n

Following this, the command according to him embarked on an \u2018Operation Close The Gate\u2019 to seal all access roads into the state, which resulted in arrest and seizure of 1.3 tonnes of cannabis sativa.<\/p>\n

The commander pointed out that in addition to making arrests, the command doubled its efforts to fight the menace through sensitization and awareness campaigns.<\/p>\n

He revealed that from January to December 2024, the command reached an estimated number of 27,648 audience through sensitisation and awareness campaigns which were conducted in 128 places throughout the state, including government offices, schools, faith-based organizations, among others.<\/p>\n

The commander said, \u201cWithin the year 2024, we\u2019ve been able to arrest 675 suspects and seized 9.7 tons of variety of hard drugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve also succeeded in seizing 537.81 liters of liquid based substances of abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of prosecution, we have prosecuted a number of people and we have succeeded in convicting a total number of 221 suspects; this is the second in all the state commands of NDLEA in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are led by one state command which is the first that has recorded 261 and Ogun State is the second with 221 convictions,\u201d he told DAILY POST.<\/p>\n

The NDLEA boss stated that in order to reduce drug demand, the command also took its advocacy to eminent individuals who are influencers in society, to enable them contribute their quota in the fight against drugs.<\/p>\n

Speaking about its expectation in 2025, Rabe noted hat the command will expedite action on issues of enforcement, interceptions, and create an interdiction point in various roads coming into the state.<\/p>\n
