{"id":150310,"date":"2025-02-14T21:49:42","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T20:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/nigerian-senator-ibrahim-advises-united-nations-against-global-tax-to-fund-sdgs"},"modified":"2025-02-17T12:51:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T11:51:31","slug":"nigerian-senator-ibrahim-advises-united-nations-against-global-tax-to-fund-sdgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/nigerian-senator-ibrahim-advises-united-nations-against-global-tax-to-fund-sdgs","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Senator, Ibrahim, advises United Nations against global tax to fund SDGs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Jimoh Ibrahim, has informed the United Nations that proposing a global tax to fund the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs is inappropriate and unacceptable and warned that the international system is anarchic and lacks the authority to comply.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the interparliamentary opening session of the world body in New York on Thursday, he added that there is no comprehensive international system in place.<\/p>\n<p>According to Senator Ibrahim, in a statement released to journalists in Nigeria on Friday, global taxes would further exacerbate inequality within the geocentric system and could also increase poverty, undermining the United Nations\u2019 efforts to eradicate poverty by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>As an alternative, he suggested that environmental polluters compensate Africa to alleviate the debt burden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for African legislators to act decisively and compel the rest of the world to pay compensation for climate impacts so that we can finance our SDGs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Ibrahim identified that, among other issues, the SDGs struggle to achieve the goal of poverty eradication, saying many who are invested in meaningful outcomes are being excluded.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cFurthermore, there is a lack of transparency, a deficit of trust, a significant failure of multilateralism, and insufficient support from non-state actors for the SDGs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He informed the United Nations that the year 2030 is approaching rapidly, emphasising a major shortfall in achieving the primary goal of poverty eradication.
