{"id":15056,"date":"2019-09-04T17:14:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T17:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=15056"},"modified":"2019-09-04T17:14:14","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T17:14:14","slug":"south-africa-vows-crackdown-on-xenophobic-attacks-after-five-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/south-africa-vows-crackdown-on-xenophobic-attacks-after-five-die","title":{"rendered":"South Africa vows crackdown on xenophobic attacks after five die"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five people have been killed in a surge of xenophobic violence in South Africa, police said on Tuesday, as President Cyril <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyril_Ramaphosa\">Ramaphosa<\/a> vowed to clamp down and the African Union, Nigeria and Zambia condemned the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Hordes of people \u2014 some armed with axes and machetes \u2014 gathered in Johannesburg\u2019s central business district for a third day of unrest directed against foreigners, hours after mobs burned and looted shops in the township of Alexandra, prompting police to fire rubber bullets to disperse them.<\/p>\n<p>Five deaths \u2014 most of them South Africans \u2014 have been reported, police said, adding that 189 people had been arrested.<\/p>\n<p>In a video address broadcast on Twitter, Ramaphosa said attacks on businesses run by \u201cforeign nationals is something totally unacceptable, something that we cannot allow to happen in South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want it to stop immediately,\u201d said Ramaphosa, adding that the violence had \u201cno justification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sporadic violence against foreign-owned stores and enterprises has a long history in South Africa, where many locals blame immigrants for high unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>The country is a major destination for economic migrants from neighbouring Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Others come from much farther away, including South Asia and Nigeria, Africa\u2019s most populous country.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin Booldchand, who lives in Coronationville, a low income suburb west of Johannesburg, said he witnessed one of the killings on Tuesday, which was blamed on a Pakistani store owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner of the shop shot him straight into the face,\u201d Booldchand told AFP. \u201cHe didn\u2019t have to shoot the guy like that you know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are taking our jobs and stuff (and) it is our country after all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s assaults appear on a greater scale than in the past, although the full details remain unclear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey burned everything,\u201d Bangladeshi shop owner Kamrul Hasan, 27, told AFP in Alexandra, adding that his shop gets attacked every three to six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my money is gone. If the (South African) government pays for my plane ticket, I will go back to Bangladesh,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The violence and looting of shops occurred in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p>Similar incidents occurred in the capital Pretoria on Monday, when local media reported shacks and shops burning in the Marabastad \u2014 a central business area largely populated by economic migrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Nigerian anger \u2013<br \/>\nNigeria summoned its South African ambassador to express \u201cdispleasure over the treatment of her citizens\u201d and said it would dispatch a special envoy.<\/p>\n<p>Several Nigerians used social media to call for a boycott of South African companies, including telecoms provider MTN, satellite television service DSTV and retailer Shoprite.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, African Union chairperson Moussa Faki condemned the violence \u201cin the strongest terms\u201d but said he was encouraged \u201cby arrests already made by the South African authorities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Zambia has cancelled an international friendly football match which was slated for Lusaka next weekend against South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is because of the security concerns, you never know what can happen,\u201d Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) secretary general Adrian Kashala, told AFP. \u201cWe want to be sure of the security of (the) visiting team\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks on foreign stores began a day after South African truckers started a nationwide strike on Sunday to protest against the employment of foreign drivers. They blocked roads and torched foreign-driven vehicles mainly in the southwestern KwaZulu-Natal province.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy President David Mabuza condemned all attacks on foreign nationals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a nation founded on the values of ubuntu (humanity) as espoused by our founding father, President Nelson Mandela\u2026 we should always resist the temptation of being overwhelmed by hatred,\u201d he said in Cape Town on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Sickly economy \u2013<br \/>\nThe violence erupted ahead of a meeting of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town, where hundreds of political and business leaders will gather for three days from Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>David Makhura, the premier of Johannesburg\u2019s Gauteng province, said rioting was not a solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis issue can be dealt with without resorting to xenophobia,\u201d Makhura told reporters. \u201cThere is no country that does not have foreign nationals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition parties pinned the blame on the ruling African National Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africans are scared and lack real hope for the future,\u201d said Mmusi Maimane, leader of the Democratic Alliance, South Africa\u2019s official opposition. \u201cWe are seeing economic and social collapse in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa took office after elections in May that he won on a platform of reviving the country\u2019s economy and boost employment.<\/p>\n<p>But in July, the national statistics office said joblessness had reached 29 percent \u2014 the highest since the country\u2019s quarterly labour force survey was introduced 11 years earlier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five people have been killed in a surge of xenophobic violence in South Africa, police said on Tuesday, as President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to clamp down and the African Union, Nigeria and Zambia condemned the attacks.
