{"id":1506,"date":"2019-01-02T16:45:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=1506"},"modified":"2019-01-02T16:45:47","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:45:47","slug":"what-nigerian-government-must-do-nlc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/what-nigerian-government-must-do-nlc","title":{"rendered":"What Nigerian government must do \u2013 NLC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari government should ensure sustainable jobs to reduce the rate of poverty in the country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1524595905268-4\" data-google-query-id=\"CITLucW9z98CFY6L7Qod35UGnA\">\n<p>NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos on Wednesday while making comments on national issues.<\/p>\n<p>Wabba said government must implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to improve the lives of the people and develop the country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1524595905268-5\" data-google-query-id=\"CIXLucW9z98CFY6L7Qod35UGnA\">\n<p>He said sustainable jobs would only be available if the government created conducive environment for industries to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe cannot be importers and consumers of what we do not produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is the need to resuscitate closed factories, such as textile and make business environment competitive and attractive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1524595905268-6\" data-google-query-id=\"CIbLucW9z98CFY6L7Qod35UGnA\">\n<p>The NLC president said government should also reduce electricity tariff to boost production and make businesses thrive.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mohammed Yinusa, President, Nigeria Employers\u2019 Consultative Association (NECA), who spoke on the nation\u2019s poverty index, said government needed more interventions to raise the living standard of the people.<\/p>\n<p>Yinusa commended government\u2019s pro-poor policies, but said government at all levels should pay attention to the development of critical indices of the Human Development Index (HDI).<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report is an indicative of a country\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report measured national achievement in health, education and income,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that adequate and sustainable attention must be paid to these indices to lift the citizens out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>According to Yinusa, government should work towards prioritising the creation of an enabling environment for large, small and medium enterprises.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-20\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari government should ensure sustainable jobs to reduce the rate of poverty in the country.
